Driveway Paving in Ontario: A Homeowner's Guide to Quotes and Contractors

Driveway Paving Guide

A new driveway is a 15 to 25 year investment. Here is what every Ontario paving quote should include — and what most leave out.

Asphalt driveway replacement in Southern Ontario runs $3,500 to $12,000 depending on size, base condition, and scope. Understanding what drives cost helps you compare quotes fairly and avoid the two most common paving mistakes.

What Drives Cost

The two biggest cost variables in any driveway project are base preparation and size — not asphalt price

Most homeowners focus on the price per square foot for asphalt. But in Southern Ontario, where freeze-thaw cycles are severe, the base preparation under the asphalt is the dominant factor in both cost and longevity. A properly prepared base (excavation, grading, compacted gravel base layer) costs more upfront and determines whether your driveway lasts 20 years or cracks in 5.

Cost Breakdown

Where a typical Ontario driveway replacement budget goes

25–30%

35–40%
Grading and edge work

"A quote that is 30% cheaper than others for the same driveway is almost always cheaper because the base preparation is minimal or skipped. That saves money once. It costs much more the second time when the driveway fails in five years instead of twenty."

Quote Checklist

What a complete Ontario driveway paving quote should include — check each item present in yours

Existing driveway removal and disposal is explicitly included and priced. Some quotes assume you will handle removal separately. Confirm tear-out, hauling, and disposal are included in the total.
Granular base depth and compaction specification is stated. A minimum 4-inch compacted granular base (6 inches preferred in Ontario conditions) should be specified in writing. A quote that does not mention base depth is not specifying what you are getting.
Asphalt thickness is specified — minimum 2 inches compacted for residential. Two inches compacted hot-mix asphalt is the minimum standard for Ontario residential driveways. Less than this will not hold up to freeze-thaw cycling.
Grading and drainage direction is confirmed. The driveway should drain away from the house. Confirm the contractor will grade to achieve this, especially near the garage apron and foundation.
Sealcoating recommendation and timeline is included. New asphalt should not be sealcoated for the first 6 to 12 months. A contractor who recommends immediate sealing or does not mention sealing at all is worth questioning.
Warranty period for workmanship is stated. A reputable paving contractor should provide at least a 1-year workmanship warranty. Any cracking, heaving, or surface failure within the warranty period should be addressed without charge.
Best time to book in Ontario: Paving season runs from May through October in Southern Ontario. Late spring bookings (May to June) typically offer better scheduling availability and consistent temperature conditions for proper asphalt curing. Fall paving is possible but creates a shorter curing window before first frost.
